On The Beat: Feeling Body is in the early stages of accepting photos from around the world illustrating the Latino American story of women, girls, and children portraying the hostile environment towards their body within a social and political framework.

On The Beat: Feeling Body is a poetic documentary short about the feminine and women in search of empowerment and liberation through the practices of music and dance. This is a Latino American story of trusting one’s body amidst the current political and social climate. What is the beat that drives all creation towards positive social change?

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Photographers and photojournalists

Any person using photography in their work or as an individual can enter. Photos should be taken after January 1, 2019.

Accepted format: JPG, TIF 300DPI for print production.

Deadline: November 15th, 2020

Photos selected will be published honoring each entry and credited to the submission name on the entry form.

About the Filmmaker

Karla is a Tijuana native and San Diego based and emerging filmmaker, stop-motion teaching-artist and Expressive Arts Therapist with roots in the US/Mexican border of Tijuana. Awarded with both national and local filmmaking grants to create social change including YAB State Farm®, Boys and Girls Foundation, Gould Foundation, and private funding from 2010–2017. Karla focuses her lens in the human mind-body disconnection through a contemplative and poetic narrative. She has witnessed violence and police brutality toward the human body especially toward immigrants at the border. Leader and founder of the stop-motion animation program, Girls! Camera! Action! a film program developed to provide a positive outlet and voice to young Latina girls in San Diego, CA (2010–2015). Her directorial debut, Mujer Inmigrante was part of the San Diego Latino Film Festival in 2010. Her PSAs have reached local TV and the San Diego County of Education. Director and producer of In Tune a short documentary nominated for competition on the 2019 San Diego Latino Film Festival. For over 8 years she has deeply presented relevant social issues affecting the Latino community through film in the region and abroad.
